Michael was born in Papua New Guinea and raised in Townsville North Queensland, moving to Cairns in 1988. Graduating with Bachelor of Laws at James Cook University in 2006 and completing a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice with Queensland University of Technology in 2007 before being admitted as a solicitor 31 May 2007.

A father of two commencing full-time study in 2002 after being made redundant from a major bank in Australia.
